The BSWPA, in conjunction with the Greater Pittsburgh
Community Food Bank, set up a table display at the Lawrenceville
Fireworks Festival in Arsenal Park. Let's give kudos to Jim
"Cisco" Franciscus for coordinating the joint effort
with the Food Bank. Thanks, Cisco, for another terrific effort
with great results.
A hearty thank you also goes out to Tony Ceoffe,
who coordinated the event on behalf of Lawrenceville United.
Tony arranged for the loan of a table so we wouldn¹t
have to haul ours around, and set us up in a terrific spot
right at the 40th Street entrance to Arsenal Park. A nicer,
more helpful guy you couldn¹t hope to meet. Here¹s
hoping we get to work with Tony on next year's Lawrenceville
Fireworks Festival.
Representing the Blues Society at the Lawrenceville
event were Jim and Jonnye Weber, Jackie Coates (a new volunteer),
and Annie Sutton. Anne Hawkins was there for the Greater Pittsburgh
Community Food Bank. As you can see in the pictures, we had
a lot of fun decorating the display table, stringing our banner
up between the trees, and chewing the fat with some friends
who came by to visit as well as the good people of Lawrenceville.
The purpose of the July 7 venture was distributing
information about the BSWPA and the Blues Festival. We handed
out about 200 introductory letters on the Blues Society and
all the handbills the Food Bank gave us on the Blues Festival
(taking place from July 20 through July 22 at Hartwood Acres).
There was genuine interest in the info on the Blues Society
as well as the Blues Festival, and we appreciate the warm
reception we got from the Lawrenceville residents.
Music at the Festival was provided by The Spuds
and Sonic Blues. Both bands, very different from each other,
played terrific sets. The Spuds are more oriented towards
classic 50¹s rockers, and pulled out a few obscure tunes
from that genre that I hadn't heard in ages. It was a real
treat to hear those old chestnuts done a la Spuds. Being a
high-energy band, The Spuds were a good choice to get the
evening off to a great start.
Sonic Blues picked right up where The Spuds
left off and kept the energy rolling from the stage. Their
music is more 60s, 70s, and Blues oriented with an original
or two thrown in. The original material blends so well with
the covers that you get the feeling you¹re listening
to a classic song that somehow escaped your memory.
The grand finale of the night was the Zambelli
fireworks. They were truly spectacular, and the perfect way
to end a summer¹s day in the park.
Hope you enjoy the pictures!
Annie Sutton
P.S. Don¹t forget about the Pittsburgh
Blues Women Fundraiser at Cefalo¹s in Carnegie on Sunday,
August 5, from 2 PM to 9 PM. It¹s shaping up to be a
real rocker!!!
